Yesterday evening
After a tough day driving the laptop around the desk I was feeling wound-up and ready to relieve tension by drowning a few maggots.
Since the weekend I've been preparing maggots in krill powder, following the advice of Match Ace, Jamie Masson they have been into plastic bags with the krill powder, out to breathe, into the bag overnight again and out again into the bait box.
Seeing the weather forecast and knowing my timetable for the rest of the week that was it, now or never for the krilled maggots.
I started fishing at around seven o'clock on peg four. Feeding my maggots, infused with the wonder-powder I was certain that a large, hitherto uncaught tench would be on the bank within minutes. For over an hour I watched my float remain motionless. I tried changing the shotting and started feeding goundbait too in an effort to get fish on my hook.
A few bubbles showed up in the swim where the wonder maggots had landed but still none of the fish showed any interest in the hookbait.
Finally at nine, my patience and the light running short, I picked up all tackle and shifted to the new peg. This time tried and tested groundbait joined the maggots, which I was rapidly losing faith in. Twenty minute later and having changed to a very light float, I was finally into a 3/4 pond roach. It tried to lose me amongst the lilies in the swim but I kept it high in the water until it finally graced the bottom of my net.
From then fishing was hard but produced some beautifully coloured roach. None were as large or gave me the same short but hard battle in the stems but all were looking very well with pewter flanks and backs almost black.
The final fish of the night did manage to get amongst the lilies and somehow transferred the hook to the stem. I pulled against the stem and the knot broke. It was almost dark and I didn't feel like tying another on in the gloom.
I left very happy that I may have only had a few fish but I had earned them. As for krilled maggots, I'm yet to be convinced. Maybe another day, maybe it's time to try something else.

July work party
Every month we meet at the Marl Pit to carry out maintenance, improvements and conservation work. The group meet on the first Saturday of every month at 10.00 am and usually work until lunchtime.
On Saturday 2nd July we shall be concentrating on putting the finishing touches to the new peg, clearing lilies from swims and doing some experimental dredging of the swims using the highly technical equipment of a bucket tied to a rope.
You don't have to be a member of Swynnerton Y.C. Angling Club to join in, so come along if you like. It's a great way to get outdoors and have a little bit of exercise and a laugh.

Starting a new blog for the Marl Pit, Swynnerton
Ages ago one of our members suggested I should start a blog to keep people interested in what goes on at the Marl Pit in Swynnerton. Finally I'm getting around to it.
To start it off I thought it would be good to post the series of videos that were made in 2009 as part of the original "Pond Project. " (I also thought this might be cooler than me simply writing stuff)
I plan to add more updates and information soon, so keep checking in on the Marl Pit blog.
